The small, gold, double arched doorways over the altar table are a tabernacle, which is a storage area for consecreated hosts. That is, bread that has been turned into Jesus during the mass. The red candle in the foreground is lit when such hosts are in the tabernacle so that folks who happen by can show the proper respect. The candle is not lit in the photo, so the tabernacle was empty.
