When my mom dies, I was a llowed ot have a flat plaque made out of one particular kind of marble, that the lawn mower could just drive over and the marble had to have "an approved Christian symbol on it." No such restrictions appear to be in effect in Venice, across from the nuns.

I saw many people out doing grave maintenance, which is probably why people can do whatever they want with markers, since they'll be caring for it. Some graves seemed neglected, like this mausoleum.

The San Marco cathedral is in San Marco square and once you get inside, for 2€, you can see actual bits of Saint Mark the apostle. And the skull of uh, however the lesser. I don't know my apostles very well. Sorry.
