30 June 2004 Nicola has started using Mao's outstreched arm as a hand place to keep her jewlry. I used to have a book of fiction called "Chaiman Mao Would Not Be Amused." This reminds me of that book.

5 July 2004 I was walking around the lake towards downtown Oakland and the 19th street BART station, when I came upon some highly unsusual grafitti: "St Joan of Arc" "St. Agnes" "st. Barnabas"
DSC01104.JPG
5 July 2004 Was the Grafitti just names of Saints or names of local schools or churches? "Church of the Assumption" is not a saint, but "St Charles Barromeo", "Our Lady of Lourdes", "St. Patrick" and "Our Lady of the Rosary" are.
DSC01105.JPG
5 July 2005 "Our Lady of Lourdes" "St. James the Apostle" other devotional names lurk in the distance
DSC01107.JPG
5 July 2004 "St. Augustine" was an important early theologian. "Sacred Heart" refers to the blood pumping organ in either Jesus or Mary, I forget which. It is also the name of a church or school in the area. "St. Jerome" translated the Bible from Greek to Latin. He was divinely inspired.

5 July 2004 St. Bernard, for whom the dog is named, is also known as Bernard of Clairvaux. The Virgin Mary appeared to him while he was sick and squirted breast milk onto him, which cured him. Some of it was scraped fom his cheek and preserved as a relic. There is a long and informative article about him at http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02498d.htm

5 July 2004 "St John the Baptist" is one of my favorite saints, mostly due to the adventures of his head. It was hidden. It was discovered. It was re-hidden. It was re-discovered. Pilgrims wishing to see his head now can find it at Saint Sebastian's Parish in Rome or in France at Avingon. His head has miraculously multiplied.

5 July 2004 Nicole looks around at all the Catholic grafitti, standing near a painted symbol, "Our Lady of Mercy" and "St John Vianney", which was the name of the elementary school I attended in first and second grade
DSC01111.JPG
5 July 2004 "St John the Baptist" gets multiple mentions. Maybe one for each head?
DSC01112.JPG
5 July 2005 The grafitti covers the whole parking lot. And it appears to be painted with brushes and not spray paint. Is it a sin to park on the name of a saint?
